
Alex Heeney is a Canadian film and theatre critic. She is the founder and Editor-in-Chief of Seventh Row where she has helped launch the careers of many film writers and filmmakers. Alex’s criticism focuses on character-driven independent and international films, usually about women or other marginalized groups (e.g., LGBTQ+, Indigenous, and young people). She hosts the Seventh Row Podcast, a biweekly podcast about socially progressive films from around the world. Alex is also an engineer who works on indoor air quality and teaches STEM.
Alex has published several critically acclaimed monographs on films and filmmakers, including the first full-length book ever published on Céline Sciamma (Portraits of Resistance: The Cinema of Céline Sciamma) and Joanna Hogg (Tour of Memories: The Creative Process Behind Joanna Hogg’s The Souvenir). She has also published books on nonfiction filmmaking, including Subjective realities: The art of creative nonfiction film, about contemporary innovative approaches to documentary filmmaking. She is currently completing a monograph on the films of Joachim Trier.
